Movement Assessment for Back Pain, Hip Pain & More
Why a Clinical Movement Evaluation Changes Everything About the Care You Get
When something starts hurting, most people follow the same path. Stretch it, rest it, Google it, hope it goes away. When it doesn’t, they figure it’s time to see someone.
So they do what they’ve always done. Get medication to cover up the symptoms and maybe a referral to a specialist who can see them in two to three months. Or go the conservative route and get an adjustment on the area that hurts and hope it helps.
Sometimes it does. A lot of times, it doesn’t. And when it doesn’t, most people draw the wrong conclusion. They think their body is just complicated, or that this is something they’ll have to manage forever.
The real issue is usually simpler. The painful area got attention. The source of the problem didn’t.
That’s where a clinical movement evaluation changes things. Not more treatment. Better information before treatment starts.
Pain Is a Signal. Not a Diagnosis.
Pain is your body communicating that something needs attention. It’s useful information. But it’s not a roadmap.
The area that hurts is often not the area that’s failing. A hip that can’t rotate forces the knee to compensate with every step, every squat, every landing. A thoracic spine that’s lost its extension forces the shoulder into impingement every time the arm goes overhead. A foot that’s stopped loading properly changes how force travels through everything above it and often shows up as knee or hip pain long before the foot ever bothers you.
This is the kinetic chain, and it’s the reason treating pain at its location is so often temporary. You’re addressing the end of a compensation pattern, not what created it.
Finding what’s driving the problem is the first job of real care. Everything else is guesswork dressed up as treatment.
“Tight” Is Usually a Symptom, Not a Diagnosis
When people walk through our door, they frequently describe the same things:
‘My hips are just tight.’ ‘My hamstrings have always been tight.’ ‘My back locks up. It’s been like this for years.’
Sometimes there is a genuine mobility restriction. But more often, ‘tight’ is the body’s response to a position it doesn’t trust, not a structural limitation that needs to be stretched out.
Here’s why this matters: if your body lacks the strength, control, or neural coordination to feel safe in a range of motion, it will guard that range. Stiffness is a protective response. The nervous system is doing exactly what it’s designed to do. Limiting access to territory it doesn’t believe the body can manage.
This is why you can stretch every day and still feel tight. You’re working against a protection mechanism, not a length problem. The body isn’t going to release a position it doesn’t trust just because you held a stretch for 90 seconds.
The solution isn’t more stretching. It’s building the capacity that earns trust back.
What We’re Actually Looking For
A MoveStrong assessment isn’t a checklist. It’s a structured investigation built around three questions.
What can your body actually do? We look at how you move under real conditions: how you squat, hinge, rotate, breathe, and transfer force. Not in isolation. In the patterns that matter to how you actually live and train.
Where is the weak link? Where does control break down? Where does the body compensate or avoid? Where is force leaking through instead of being expressed? The weak link is rarely where the pain is. Finding it requires following the chain.
What does your body tolerate? Range of motion is only part of the picture. What matters more is capacity under load: how a joint or system behaves when real demands are placed on it. A hip that moves freely when you’re lying on a table may collapse completely when you’re on one leg under load. Tolerance is the true test.
These three questions give us a specific, accurate picture of what’s driving your problem. Not a theory. A finding. Something we can point to, explain clearly, and build a plan around.
What You Leave With
The first visit at MoveStrong has one job: give you clarity.
By the end, you’ll know exactly what we found and why it matters. You’ll understand what’s been driving the problem. In plain language, not clinical jargon. You’ll have a starting plan you can actually execute, and a way to measure progress that doesn’t depend on how you feel on any given day.
That last part is important. Pain is real, but it’s an unreliable measure of progress. Sleep, stress, training load, and a dozen other factors influence how you feel. The more reliable question is: what can you do today that you couldn’t do before? That’s where real progress lives.
What Comes After
The assessment is not the product. It’s the foundation everything else is built on.
From there, care follows a deliberate progression. We work to reduce unnecessary protection. The stiffness, guarding, and over-bracing the body has built up around the problem. We restore control in the places where it’s been lost. We build strength in the positions your body has been avoiding. And we increase tolerance progressively, so your body can handle the actual demands of your training and your life. Not just a clinical environment.
This is the difference between recovering to baseline and building past it. Between managing a problem and solving it.
You didn’t come here to get back to where you were. You came here to build a body that holds up.
The Philosophy Behind It
Gravity shows up every day. It’s not getting lighter.
Which means the goal of care isn’t to feel better, it’s to become more capable. To exert more force on the world than it’s exerting on you. That idea shapes everything we do at MoveStrong: every assessment, every plan, every session.
Pain-free is a starting point, not a finish line. The finish line is a body you can trust. For training, for life, and for the years ahead.
This Is For You If:
You’ve tried PT, chiro, or massage and keep cycling back to the same problem
You feel “tight” no matter how consistently you stretch
You’ve been told to rest, but rest never seems to help
You want a plan built on actual findings, not a guess
